DPRK senior official dies

PYONGYANG, Oct. 29, -- Pak Song Chol, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea and honorary vice-president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, died Tuesday at the age of 95, the official KCNA news agency reported Wednesday.

He died following a long illness, the KCNA said.

Kim Jong Il, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), sent a wreath to the late Pak.


"Pak was a faithful revolutionary soldier who devoted his whole life to the cause of national liberation and working class liberation and socialist construction and the independent reunification of the country under the leadership of President KimIl Sung," the KCNA said.

Pak joined the Korean People's Revolutionary Army (KPA) in April 1934. He was active as a divisional commander of the KPA, deputy commander of the Navy Command and director of the Reconnaissance Department of the Supreme Command during the Korean War.

He worked as vice-premier of the Administration Council from July 1973, its premier from April 1976, vice-president of the DPRK from December 1977 and honorary vice-president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly from September 1998.

A state funeral will be held Thursday.
